How this calculator works
It compares today's date on your device with the date you pick and counts the calendar days between them. Today isn't counted, so if it's Monday, Wednesday is 2 days away. Leap years are handled by the calendar itself, so 29 February is counted in years that have one.
- Weeks are the days divided by 7, shown as whole weeks and days.
- Working days are Monday to Friday, leaving out bank holidays in the part of the UK you choose. They count the date you picked but not today.
- The live countdown runs to midnight at the start of your date, or to the time you type, and ticks every second. Once a date has passed it counts how long ago it was.
The quick dates always pick the next one to come: Christmas Day on 25 December, New Year's Day on 1 January, the online Self Assessment deadline on 31 January, and Easter Sunday, worked out with the standard calculation for the Western church calendar. The next bank holiday comes from GOV.UK's list for your part of the UK. Your birthday counts to your next birthday and shows how old you'll be. If you were born on 29 February, it counts to 28 February in years without a 29th.

How many days until Christmas?

Does it count today?
No. The count starts from tomorrow, so a date tomorrow is 1 day away. That's how most people count, and it matches "sleeps until" for children: the number of nights left.
When is the Self Assessment deadline?
Online tax returns for the 2025/26 tax year must be filed, and the tax paid, by 11:59pm on 31 January 2027. Paper returns were due by 31 October 2026. The deadline is 31 January every year for the tax year that ended the previous April.
How is the date of Easter worked out?
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, using the church's set tables rather than the real moon. The calculator uses the standard formula for this, so it works for any year. In the UK, Good Friday is 2 days before and Easter Monday is the day after.
Can I count days since a date in the past?
Yes. Pick any past date and it shows how many days, weeks and working days ago it was, and the countdown turns into a count of the time since.
Why might the countdown be a second or two out?
It uses your device's clock. If your clock is a little fast or slow, so is the countdown. Our time zone converter can check how far out your clock is.
