Work minutes calculator

Got sidetracked and lost count? Enter the minutes you have to log today (480 by default), what you've logged so far, when you started, when you stopped (or leave that empty for now) and your breaks. It works out how long you've worked and tells you how many minutes you're under or over, so you know exactly how much to log next.

Under–
Worked so far–
Left of the day–

With no end time it uses the time now on your device, updated every few seconds. Forgot to log something after you finished? Enter the time you stopped. Logged minutes and breaks can be added up with +, like 90+25+40, and take 1:30 or 1h 30m too. Start time uses the 24-hour clock (08:30, 0830) or am and pm.

Runs in your browser. What you type is saved only in this browser on this device, so a refresh won't lose it, and nothing is sent anywhere.

How this calculator works

It works out how long you've been at work and compares that with what you've logged:

Every figure is in whole minutes, because that's how most timesheets want it, with hours and minutes alongside. An end time earlier than the start time is taken as the next day, so a night shift from 22:00 to 06:00 is 480 minutes. With no end time, a start time later than the time now is taken as the evening before.

The boxes are kept in your browser's local storage, on this device only, so you can close the tab and come back. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else. The next day, the logged minutes, start and end times are cleared, and your expected minutes and breaks are kept.

Tips for logging time by the minute

Frequently asked questions

How many minutes is an 8-hour working day?

480 minutes (8 × 60). A 7.5-hour day is 450 minutes, 7 hours is 420 and 37.5 hours a week is 2,250 minutes.

How do I work out how many minutes I still need to log?

Take your start time away from the time now, take off your breaks, then take off what you've logged. Started at 09:00, it's 13:30 and you had 30 minutes for lunch: 270 − 30 = 240 minutes worked. With 205 logged, you're 35 minutes under.

I finished hours ago. Can I still check what I forgot to log?

Yes. Enter your start time, the time you stopped as the end time, your breaks and what you've logged. It works out the minutes between your start and end times, not up to now, so the Under figure is exactly what you still need to log.

What does "over" mean?

You've logged more minutes than you've worked since your start time, after breaks. It usually means a typo in an entry, or that you logged a task ahead of time.

What time will I finish?

Your start time plus your expected minutes plus your breaks. Starting at 08:00 with 480 minutes and a 30-minute lunch, you finish at 16:30. The calculator shows it under the boxes.

How do I work out the minutes between two times?

Turn both times into minutes after midnight and subtract. 10:40 is 640 and 09:15 is 555, so the difference is 85 minutes. The time difference calculator does it for any two times, across midnight and minus breaks.

Can I use it for decimal-hour timesheets?

The figures are in minutes and hours:minutes. To turn minutes into decimal hours, divide by 60 (45 minutes is 0.75), or use the minutes and hours converter.

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

It's saved in your browser's local storage on this device only, so a refresh won't lose it. It's never sent anywhere. Clear your browser's data for this site to remove it. In a private window it lasts only until you close it.
